Why Are Gamers So Excited About The Sony Playstation VR 2?

It’s hard to ignore the steady chugging of the Playstation VR 2 hype train. It’s been in development for a long time, but details have been kept frustratingly close to Sony’s chest. That’s all behind us now though.

We’ve seen the launch games and we’ve gotten a good look at the revolutionary new hardware. Critics are hailing it as a monumental leap forward for VR entertainment. In short, there’s a lot to be excited about. Today, we’ll explore the many intriguing elements of Sony’s latest VR headset.

A Big Hardware Boost

The PS VR2 is a dramatic improvement over the first gen headset in virtually every way. It tracks the player’s eye movement, it offers a larger field of view, and it doubles the pixel per eye numbers. All of the movement tracking is self-contained within the headset this generation, completely eliminating the need for the TV-mounted PS Camera of the previous model.

As far as the competition is concerned, the PS VR 2 stands tall here too. It offers a better pixel count than most others, and it’s priced competitively too. There’s still a lot left to be dissected, and no one yet knows how Sony plans to make the most out of this new technology. But the spec sheet sure has us excited.

Improved Controllers

Sony is calling them VRS Sense controllers, and they share surprisingly little with their predecessors. The new controllers are designed to be held upright and take advantage of the exact same adaptive trigger technology used in the PS5 equivalent. The controllers use a similar haptic feedback system in the controllers and the headset to help boost immersion.

We won’t know exactly how the new controllers stack up until they start arriving on doorsteps at the tail end of February, but it’s safe to say they’re worth getting excited about. Sony has a fantastic reputation for building comfortable and precise controllers, and we can’t wait to get our hands on them.

Brand New VR Experiences

An upgraded headset and fancy new controllers are only as good as the games. We’re talking hardware specs now, because we haven’t had the chance to suit up and set out just yet. It’s safe to say we won’t be talking about specs for long. The release of the new headset comes with a few heavy-hitting, all new experiences.

Horizon Call of the Mountain

A standalone experience set in the now-famous Horizon world, take control of a disgraced former soldier and fight for the future of your people.

Gran Turismo 7

The biggest name in racing simulation is getting a free VR upgrade when the PS VR 2 launches in February. Experience the single player campaign in a whole new way, or compete against friends in one of the most immersive racing experiences ever made.

Resident Evil Village + Resident Evil 4

Both games are getting VR upgrades on February 22 too. Both Resident Evil Village and the new Resident Evil 4 remake will receive full VR support via a free update for all owners of the PS5 version.

Remastered and Recalibrated VR Classics

VR gaming isn’t as mainstream as console or PC gaming, but it’s been around for long enough to have seen the release of an impressive library of award-winning games. The PS VR 2 gives these games an entirely new audience, and quite a few developers have remastered and re-released their games for this very reason.

Of the growing list of remastered and recalibrated games, we’re most excited to get our hands on the following:

A Whole New World

However you look at it, the pending release of the Playstation VR 2 is sure to be eventful. From an all-star line-up of new games, a bevy of remastered old favorites, and hardware specs designed to re-define the medium now and into the future, it’s safe to say that we’re excited.

Sony officially releases the Playstation VR 2 to the world on February 22, 2023 for $549.99 each, but most retailers are already accepting preorders. If you’re hoping to get one on launch, preordering one is probably your best bet. Either way, we’ll be excitedly watching it all play out.
